TURUA’S ROADS.
APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY. An application for a for £ subsidy on Turua’s by roads leading to the Crown roads was made by a deputation (Messrs T. W. Rhodes M.P., D. G. McMillan and J. Bennett) to the Minister for Public Works, Hon. J. G; Coates, at Auckland recently. The roads concerned are the Wharepoa FerryKerepeehi Road, Orchard Fast Road and the Piako Road from T.urua to Hick’s corner, and are part of the permanent reading scheme for the Turua riding; The Minister replied that if the County Council arranged its programme and decided to spend so much a year he could help but if a large sum of money were asked for he could net assist. Mr. Rhodes suggested that the payments be spread over three years. The Minister said there would be more chance of getting the money if the payments were distributed over a number of years. He suggested that the deputation interview the district engineer whose recommendation should be obtained. It has since been ascertained that Mr. May, assistant Public Works engineer, Paeroa, will very soon make his report on the roads. In the meantime, however, immediate steps are to be taken to submit the loan proposal to the ratepayers.
