LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Among- the list of recently appointed justices of the peace appear the following names: Messrs. A. H. Rogers (Turua), J. M. Thompson (Kerepeehi), and E. J. Walters (Hlkutaia). ,

It is scarcely conceivable that there are worse roads than those of Nethertpn-, but motorists report that the road from Wharepoa to the ferry is absolutely the worst in the district. 'There are enormous pot-holes in .the surface, and a car going even at its slowest would be fortunate to escape without sustaining such damage as broken springs or broken axles.

In speaking of Mr. A. White at the social evening on Thursday last Cr. Flatt said Mr. White was a very good, sound member of; the Borough Council and he could be ill-fsparttd in Paeroa as we have not too many of his stamp.

(n proposing the toast of “The Press” on Thursday evening at a social evening Mr. Flatt said that the time was coming when Paeroa will have to take over its own lighting from the Power Board. There was a lot of power going to waste and there was no reason why we ■should not have more small industries in the place.

In proposing the toast of “The Press” at the 'farewell to Mr. White on Thursday last Mr. F. E Flatt paid a high tribute to Mr. Thos. E. McMillan’s ability as editor, and described his as being a “tower of strength to Paeroa.”

What we want is good roads. They were far more important to us than railways, said Mr. Flatt at the smoker the other night.

It will be good news to the Turua people that one of the County punts has been completed by Messrs Foote Brbs. and a load of metal is to be brought to Turua on Tuesday. It should therefore n t be long before some little improvement in seen in the roads in that district.

The exceptionally heavy rains which fell on Friday night did not cause any flooding on the Hauraki Plains, though many of the drains were fully taxed to carry off the storm water.. The deluge tended to clean the road-s, but the showers of Saturday afternoon brought them back io their original muddy state.
