The Supervisor of the Manual and Technical branch of the Education Board, Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, has written to the Schoo] Committee acknowledging the receipt of the sum of £Bl and asking for further information regarding this money. He stated that at the next meeting of the Board, on the 7th inst., he would recommend the Board to apply to the Minister for permission to raise the money required for the establishment of a Manual Training School at Paeroa by the purchase of Government 5| per cent, bonds, redeemable in five years. It will be seen that before the matter is definitely fixed the Government will require to sanction the raising of the money, but from the statements made by the Hon. the Minister of Education (Mr. C. J. Parr) at the official opening of the extension of the school some months ago, this will not be a difficult matter. Our local member, Mr. H. Poland, has promised his assistance, and we feel that there should be no obstacle in the way. So far as the raising of the money, namely, £Bl, is concerned, the local committee has guaranteed that the guarantors of this amount will be repaid. This should not be a difficult matter, more especially if the townspeople will take the matter up in the spirit that they should. The collection of the amount is now in hand, and it is hoped that the committee will be backed up by parents who will be asked to contribute. The matter at first sight may not appear to be quite clear, so we will again explain the procedure and what the £Bl is required for. The Government can sell its. £lOO bonds at £97 and it is the difference, ‘namely, £3, that the public are asked to subscribe to. Every £1 contributed will, therefore, mean that the Department will be able to expend about £33. The urgent need for the establishment of the school is so great and so well known to parents, especially those who know of “tech.” days, that they will require no inducement to contribute their mite to the fund. The useless long train journey to the Thames is a very sore point, and the wonder to us is that parents have put up with it so long. The way out has now presented itself, and we hope to be able to chronicle the fact that it will soon end. To those who were not in the district a short time back we would like to bring under their notice the sad accident that befel one of the scholars when returning from the Thames, whereby he was maimed for life. Train-travel-ling, even under the care of teachers, is not desirable, as many parents can bear out. We ask that one and all will rally round the School Committee and push the matter to a finality.
