■ turua. GRQWTH OF THE TOWN, ,■ The commencement of the-work if a set of offices in Turua marks another step in the progress and growth of; the town. The lack el proper office accommodation had for some time been felt, and with the progressive movement which was successful in establishing first a veterin-i ar.v surgeon and next a doctor and a in the town came more than ;ev'er the necessity for offees. With a fai -seeing spirit of optimism several jpf the townspeople formed and subjscribed to a registered building company to attend to the dearth of up-to-date buildings. The first 'fruits of ■this scheme are now being noticed in the erection of a building which will •contain several offices and a board foom. The latter will be available ;for the purpose of holding meetings. "The work of erecting this building ■has just commenced and is expected io be completed in about six weeks’ time. The building site is facing tne Havraki Road, and near the black'smit’h’s shop. :■ In addition to, the veterinarian, the ;doctor, jah<fet>he solicitor-Jt in probable that a-'hairdresser. will' soon be comSnencirig business. A! possible aspirant visited Turua recently. It is also reported that a dentist will be paying Turua periodical visits ,so that soon /Turua should be a compact little town', quite independent of others. ..The .completion of the wharf has alspjhad an effect of helping to mod- 1 ernis? the appearance ofj the place. It is a neat structure, and well deserves the praise given it at the recent conference in Paeroa by the chairman of the Thames - Harbour Board, Mr C. W. Harris, who said it. was the best of its kind in the Dominion. The finishing touches in metalling the approach were made a day or two ago. . PERSONAL! Mr. T. W. Rhodes, M.P., visit.ed Turua at the "end of last week and. opportunity was taken by the Turua people to personally acquaint their member with the present wretched state of the ijbads in the district. KEBEPEEHI. ' A TANGI. An aged Maori woman, named Piko, having died at Kerepeehi yesterday morning, arrangements to hold a tangi are being made. The tangi will, most likely eventuate to-day And a large number of visiting natives are expected. v NGATEA. THE HALL GROUNDS. A suggestion to plant trees on the Ngatea Hall grounds was made re cently by a member of the Hall Committee. With a little taste in choosing the class of trees to be planted and in laying out the grounds this would be an admirable scheme, and if properly carried put would not only lend o' little beauty to the present bare surroundings of} the hall, but also may be a start'of a beautifying scheme for the township. Schemes •such as these cannot begin too early, and if one\ public committee makes a start; the movement may grow. * THE HALL FUNDS. A ladies’ committee in connection with the Ngatea Public Hall -is at prese'nt engrossed in a scheme 1.0 raise funds to help to pay off the hall debt. It is suggested to hold a ■baazar for the purpose. As a pre-, liminary a dance was to have been ■held, ‘.ast Friday, but owing to the wretched weather it was postponed and held the following night A fair number attended, and a very enjoyable evening-was spent. Mrs. Potter supplied the music and Mr. S. Phillips was M.C. SPEED LAUNCH. A speed launch driven by Mr. Beaver was seen gliding down the Piako River past Ngatea yesterday morning at a speed which one could immediately determine could not be obtained by an ordinary river launch. NETHERTON. ; THE. ROADS. ’ With the approach of) wipter and a taste of wet weather the Netherton roads .on the main motor service and mail route are rapidly breaking up, and becoming worse with each rain. The unmetalled portion of the route is a source of trouble to the motor-car. drivers, and the many pot-hoies in the metalled roads mlake driving a very slow process. The manner in which the cars bump about, even when going only .at. a snail’s pace, makes one wonder how a machine'keeps in one piece It is possible that if the road is riot attended to the motor services will have to be run via .the Wharepoa ferry during the very wet weather. KOPUARAHI. A NEW STORE. A new store has recently been opened at Kopuarahi. This fact is a 'little evidence of the development of the district. There are now two storey-in that vicinity, one on each ■side of the riyer, (Kopuarahi and JPipiroa), within "coo-fee” of each .‘‘other.
