SCHOOL GROUNDS.

IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. • SUBSIDY. APPLIED FOR. . The . matter of getting a subsidy from the Education Department' jn the moneys collected for the improvement of the school grounds has had the attention of the local school com-* mittee for some time, and at the special meeting of the committee held last week the following letter was received from the secretary of the Board: “In, reply to your applicaton for a subsidy on contributions in aid of the school I have to inform you that the Education Department, Welling, l ton, slates that the mere entries “ Improvement to school, grounds,” “Provision of special furniture, apparatus, appliances,” and “Apparatus for organised games” are insufficient. Full details of the expenditure under each heading must be supplied. With reference to apparatus, for. organised games, I have to state that the Department declines to approve subsidy for the purchase of cricket and tennis materials and footballs, such not tiding regarded as of a permanent character, as required by the regulations. Subsidy is, however, granted for the purchase of basket-balls. The Board considers that the amount of £ll3 17s 2d is. entitled to a. subsidy of £ for £. Please be good enough to enter in section 6 the purposes on which the additional subsidy, if approved, wi/1 be expended, The total proposed expenditure should at least equal the amount of the local contributions, plus the amount of subsidy. I may state that a memorandum has been received from the Boa rd,’s architect stating that he has inspected the play ground and that he has, no hesitation in approving the scheme. As stated above, the Department ■will, however, require full details of the work.” It uas decided tha.t fresh application he made for the subsidy, giving full details of the proposed work. If the subsidy is granted the committee hopes to be able to complete the improvement scheme ■'-thatp is now tnhand.
