ROTOKOHU RATEPAYERS.
-Sir, —I have been requested to correct certain impressions that have obtained in regard to the attitude of this Association as a member of the Reference Board. Our Association has purely local matters, some of: which are of great importance to the general principles of the Rivers Improvement Scheme, to bring forward. These matters are, roughly: (1) To have the protection of our large area expedited by all possible means ; (2) to secure justice tor the claims o r our settlers who will suffer from th'’ completion of .the scheme ; (3) to support'the revision of the iniquitous betterment clause ; (4) to support the recent Commission’s proposal to have mining debris taxed, if put in our rivers, 5s to generally ’support the whole scheme and ahsist. the Public Works Deaprtment to have trie scheme expedited and completed. In regard to the matter of finance, and the contributions of local bodies, our Association fully realises chat such final allocations and adjustments must be left to the Government and the contributing bodies only. As individual taxpayers we naturally 'have personal opinions on these latter matters. But as a.n Association and member of the Reference Board we beg to assure certain other local bodies of our attitude of neutrality on all matters concerning local todies’ contributions and assessments under the Rivers Scheme. W. D. KEYS, Hon. Secretary.
