BOARD MEETS COUNCIL.
TURUA TOWNSHIP ADJUSTMENTSCONFERENCE OF COMMITTEES. Committees from the Hauraki Plains County Council and the Turua Town Board met in conference at Turua on Friday afternoon to discuss the proposals for adjusting assets and liabilities in connection with the new town board. The County Council was represented by Cr. J.. C. Miller (county chairman), Cr. W. G. Hayward, and Mr E. Walton (county clerk). The Town Board was represented by the full board in committee.
Th? County Council’s suggestions were that the assets and. liabilities be apportioned on a valuation basis. Methods by which the two bodies would work were also considered.. The Council’s committee proposed that the Board should collect and retain the general rate .levied by the Council within the Board’s area in addition to the Board’s general rate. A small sum would be paid to the Council for the County’s general expenditure. The Council would delegate to the Board the care and management of the roads in the town district, indemnifying the Council against any claims arising from the acts of the Board in respect thereof.
There is also a discussion regarding loan works. It was pointed out that notwithstanding the constitution of the Board, the Council is stilb the controlling body and it is still incumbent on the Council to take the steps precedent to the raising of loans; also to expend the money. The Council suggested that schemes should be prepared and carried out by the Board subject to the Council’s approval and supervision. It was suggested that the Board; discuss the matter and. notify the: Council of the result of their deliberations. The matter will also be> discussed by the Council.
