PAEROA-PLAINS RAILWAY.
Sir, —While this wholesome topi: is in tne air, I should like to .add my quota. There are a great many returned and other men in close proximity to the proposed line now being ‘.‘spoon fed,” by the Government, and likely to be for a long time to come. Why not allow these men to work out their own salvation by starting formation works either on grade wages, co operative system or contract ? With n capable ganger, and a boy. for messages a start could be made right away, and thus commence to create a national asset of inestimable value to the district. The Waihi line, with great engineering difficulties, was built ■ with private money. The Plains people by rating themselves can raise a temporary loan until the money market eases. Bridging the Waii'ou is the greatest obstacle (except the “go-slow” policy) ; the.balance is plain sailing. I regret an abler pen than mine is, not demonstrating the simplicity of. completing the line to Waitakaruru in a short space of time with a little push arid “ginger.” R. WHITTEN.
