BUILDING IN BOROUGH.
COUNCIL COMMITTEE REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council on Thursday night by the building committee : "Your that during the month applications for building permits- have been received from Mr J. Couper and Miss Lewis. These have been granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws, and we ask your confirmation for our action. An application from Mr R. Phillips to erect a sawmill and outbuilding and office on Station Road is before you to-night. The application states that it is proposed to use white pine for the girders and rafters of the mill, and that approved timber will be used -£or the other purposes. Owing to the fact that it is proposed ’to use white pine in the mill we would ask that the application ne left in the hand of. your committee, with power to act.” Cr. E. Edwards said he had made investigations, and found that the mil] was merely a shelter-roof, open at the sides, and not a building in the ordinary sense of the word. The building would be purely temporary, as Mr Phillips had a comparatively short lease of the property to run. He moved that the application be granted, subject to review at the end of the lease, Cr. F. McDonald seconded. Or. G. Lamb said it was opening up the question of* kahikatea again, though he did not like to oppose the application.
Cr.. W. Marshall said the granting of the application was dangerous, but white pine exposei to the. air was not dangerous, and as long as the mill was a temporary buildings, and the permit for a limited time no harm could ensue.—Application granted without dissent.
