MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL

lIAURAKI PLAINS PROPOSAL. THIRTY PUPILS PROMISED. Thirty pupils have been promised for the proposed memorial high school at Ngatea. These promises have been ptbained as a result of- a canvass’made of the Kerepeehi, Turua, Kopuaralhi, Kaihere, and Ngatea districts by Mr W. MtoDuff (chairman of the Ngatea School Committee) and Mr E. Walton (secretary of the Ngatea Memorial Committee), it will be remembered that Messrs Banks and Burns, members of th© Education Board, recently told a deputation that if; promises of 30 pupils were forthcoming a high school at Ngatea was practically assured. The < Ngatea Memorial Committee is offering £5OO towards its construction.

Messrs McDuff and Walton state that they found general- support throughout the districts, and it is considered by all the settlers approached to be an excellent and. much needed acquisition.

The following are the number of promises gained in the various dis-> tricts : Turua 8, Kopuarahi 2, Kerepeehi 5, Ngatea 8, and Kaihere 7. The canvass of. Kopuarahi has not yet been completed. , It is understood that there are half a dozen more prospective pupils there, and it is' likely that some, if not th<3 lot, will be secured. Waitakaruru has t not yet been canvassed, but it.is intended to do so. As far as can be ascertained, there are no pupils eligible r or the high school in Pipirpa this year. It was further stated that the publicity. gIYBJL to_the matter by the “Gazette” has helped th’S'-project., erably. The majority had been made conversant with the subject through these columns and with .those people Messrs McDuff and Walton were nonrepaired to go into the matter in detail. Many had been quite willing immediately they were approached to sign the guarantee.
