NGATEA. THE PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL. The Ngatea School Committee met at the school on Tuesday evening to further the high school proposal. The following attended: Messrs W. McDuff (chairman), E. Walton, W. J. Clare, and C. W. Shultz (secretary). Tn an endeavour to obtain the thirty pupils necessary for the opening of the high school, Messrs McDuff and Walton were deputed to canvass the district.. It is thought that there is every possibility of the desired number of pupils forthcoming. WAITAKARURU. DOMAIN BOARD PROPOSED. A meeting of Waitakaruru settleis was held in the hall on Tuesday evening to choose five of their number to form a domain board. An area of ten acres, nearly a mile frpm the Waitakaruru township on the road to Pipiroa, has been promised as a domain. The meeting elected Messrs C. W. Harris, R. T. Williams, ■T. Beaver, S. P. Caie, and A. Otter as board members. These names have yet to be submitted to the authorities in Wellington and the domain and board’ officially gazetted. TURUA. CONCERT. A very successful concert was held by the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Turua, in the Victoria Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance, over which the Rev. D. C Stewart presided. Electric lighting was provided for the hall by the picture proprietor, Mr Fl Olsen. The most popular concert items appeared to be comic songs by Mr A. Walker, two songs by Miss K. Miller, and a clown act by Messrs W. and V. Dally. Other items were rendered by Misses Porteous, Gibb, Darby 1 , Horrox, Dr. Bathgate, Messrs Gibb, A. Fishei, V. Cassip, Lemon, and Master Young. The Glee Club and a party of schoolboys also contributed to the success of the programme. The accompanists were Mesdames Walker and ‘Mules, Misses Darby and Gibb. PROGRESS AT THE WHARF. The Turua wharf is now practically completed, and with the execution of painting the work should be finished in a few days’ time. The next item of importance will then be the official opening, which should eventuate within the next week or so. ELECTRIC POLES. Although the. winter will be well advanced before the Turua town area is connected with the electric current, the electric supply should be available for the worst part of, the winter .month’s. The Power Board’c construction gangs are at present erecting poles in the Town Board’s area. THE BAD ROADS'. When the Turua deputations to the Hauraki Pilains County Council were pouring forth their tales of woe, one not fully acquainted with the facts may have thought that the speakers were stretching mere details ; but one as only to travel over K those roads to become acquainted with the true conditions. Mr Davies had told the County Council that there were holes in the roads two feet deep. His estimate was a very modest one, for in one or two bad portions the holes must be deeper than two feet from the proper level of the road. When the Turua end of the Piako Road has a greasy surface in the wet weather it is, to say the least, dangerous in the day time, and exceedingly treacherous at night. KEREPEEHI. LAND VALUATIONS. Mr Cook, land valuer; from Auckland, was recently at Kerepeebi, valuing some of the Native blocks in the district. A LARGE FLOOD-GATE. A start has been made in the construction of a three-barrel flood-gate in thcAwaiti block . This will be the largest flobd-gate constructed by the Lands Department on the Hauraki Plains. * A BAD ROAD. While deputations were waiting on the Hauraki Plains County Council with reference to the bad state of roads, no mention was made of the bad stretch between Kerepeehi and Ngatea which, at the time, was in a disgraceful state. The Department is now expediting the metalling of this bad portion, and has two tractors and a motor truck engaged in taking the meta] from the Kerepeehi wharf to the road in question.
