STOCK SALES.

OPENING AT CLAUDELANDS.

At Claudelands on May 4 we yarded a total of 608 head of cattle, 900 sheep and 168 pigs, and have to report a satisfactory Clearance. The demand in general was better than at recent sales, sheep especially registering a sharp advance. Beef, also was in better demand, steer, light but prime, making up to £6 15s. Heavy steers made from £5 15s to £6 10s, medium weights £4 15s to £5 10s; light 2-year beef made from £5 16s ; heavy cows reached £5 15s, medium weights £3 to £3 15s, unfinished £2 to £2 12s 6d ; store cows £1 to £1 7s, 6d. Store cattile also were and very few cattle remained unsold at the conclusion of the sale, 18 months empty heifers, and heifer calves especially, being keenly sought after. Good 2-year steers £2 15s to £3; 18months steers 30s, to £2 ; 2-year heifyers in calf, (good sorts) made to £7 15s, backward from £5 ; empty heifers 18 months £2 10s to £2 14s ; heifer calves (Jersey) £4 5s to £4 15s: Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross, same age, £1 15s to £2 10s, small £1 Is to £1 6.5; steer calves 15s to £1 6s; bulls 15s to £l. As before stated fat sheep .were in keen demand, and considerably advanced in value. Extra •heavy made from 33s to 355, heavy from 28s to 32s 6d, medium 26s 3d to 27s 6d; heavy ewes 22s 6d to. 26s 3d, medium 19s to 225, unfinished ,16s' to 17s 6d ; fat lambs, to 24s 3d, medium 17s to 21s. Store sheep values were much on a par with recent sales. Ewes in lamb, second quality, 14s 6d to 16s 6d; aged and poor 9s 'to 10s 6d ; empty ewes Us 3d. The large entry of pigs sold well under steady competition at prices equal to those ruling in other centres', AuClc’and and local buyers operating. Store pigs were a little better. Heavy baconers made to £3 13s, medium -£3 to £3 6s; heavy porkers to light baconers £2 5s to. £3 ; light to medium porkers £1 10s to £2 2s; unfinished porkers and stores £1 Is to £1 8s ; Slips 10s to 14s. Good dairy cows and heiferc, close to profit, made £ll 10s, backward and inferior sorts from £5.
