WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.

A WORTHY INSTITUTION.

ANTIDOTE TO BOLSHEVISM.

The following letter was received by the Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday from the Workers’ Educational Association, Auckland :

The Auckland centre of the Workers’ Educational Association’ is now in its eighth year of existence, and has accomplished much solid anl lasting work. The deep significance and great value of this work is becoming more and more widely recognised by students of social conditions, and an increasing measure of support is being given.- The Association is, however, urgently in need of organising funds. The Government makes an annual grant, but this in itself is not nearly sufficient eve n for our necessarily limited activities. May we, therefore, appeal to you to assist us by making a donation'? Last year classes were held in Psychology, modern history, economics, English literature, singing, chairmanship, and debating. A numben of public lectures were also given This year it is hoped to carry out a much (larger programme.

We may mention that the Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin centres depend largely on the generous support of their local bodies, Cr. P. McGuire supported the application, and a donation of two guineas was made, unanimously. It was pointed out that the Workers’ Educational Association, bv training the minds of the workers and educating them in social 'and economic problems, convinced them that reforms must come, not by revolution but by evolution. The institution, therefore, was a powerful antidote to the scourge of Bolshevism.
