ANNUAL MEETING.

AFFILIATION WITH N.Z. UNION.

The annual meeting of the Goldfields Rugby Union was held on Saturday night in the Soldiers’ Hall Mr S. Walmsley, president of the Union presiding over the following delegates: Messrs Silcock, Wells!/ and Penlington (Paeroa.) ; Phillpot, Murphy and Brown (Waihi) ; Stewarc. Holdsworth:, and Gibson (Pjakp) ; Vincent. Green, and Porteous (Hauraki Plains) ; and the secretary, Mr J. Walmsley. The minutes of ■ the last annual meeting were confirmed and the report and balance-sheet adopted, the latter showing a credit balance of £23 7s* 6d. Trie chairman remarked that before going on with the business of; the meeting he had some news tp impart which would be very acceptable to those present. A telegram had been received by the secretary which came from Mr McDa.vi'*t, a delegate to the N.Z. Rugby Union, and which read as follows : “Affiliation granted. Much opposition.’'’ Continuing, the chairman said it was very gratifying to know thafi. with the help of Mr Frost (chairman of the Auckland committee) - and Mr McDavitt (secretary of the Waikato Union), they had .at last succeeded in reaching their aims. For years the Goldfields Union had been endeavouring to obtain direct affiliation with the N.Z. Rugby Union, and he received the news with great satisfaction. When the official notification was received the name of the Goldfields Rugby Union would be changed to the Thames Valley Rugby Union. Mr Silcock said that the thanks of the Union were due to the secretary (Mr J. Walmsley) as he was mainlv responsible for the affiliation.. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. ' The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr H. Poland, M.P.; President, Mr J. W. Silcock; Vice-presi-dents. Messrs S.. Walmsley;, J. Costello ; Secretary Mr J. Walmsley; Treasurer, Mr F. J. Wells ; Auditor, Mr G. A. Bush. Piako and Paeroa have ea<sh> to elect a vice president. It was decided that the headquarters of the Union be at Paeroa. A recommendation was moved by Mr Penlington, seconded by Mr Wells, that the weight for the third-grade player:- be fixed at 9st 81b. Mr R. Phillpot moved an amendment, seconded by Mr Brown that the weight be 9st 51b. It was also recommended that the Union trophies be insured. Mr Stewart moved that letters of thanks be sent to Messrs Sprague, Andrews, and J. Walmsley for their efforts in connection with the affiliat'on to t'he N.Z. Rugby Union. - COMMITTEE MEETING.

A committee meeting was held at the conclusion of the annual naeeting, and the following draws were arranged for the inten-union matches for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup: May 27.-—Piako v. Plains, seniors at Ngatea, Mr W. Moore 1 referee, juniors at Te Aroha, Mr R. B. Penlington referee ? Paeroa v. Waihi, seniors at Paeroa; Mr R. Sprague referee- juniors at Waihi, Mr G. McMillan referee. ' ■

With regard to the weight of thirdgrade players, the secretary was instructed to inquire as to the weight ruling in other unions. It was decided to have a sole selector, with an advisory board consisting of one selector from each subuhion.

Mr R. Sprague was appointed sole selector.
