NGATEA MEMORIAL.

HIGH SCHOOL SUGGESTION. THE MINISTER’S ADVICE. ! The suggestion to secure the erection of a big'll school or technical school at Ngatea to serve as a memorial to the fallen soldiers was discussed at the Ngatea. householders’ meeting on Monday evening, Mr W. McDuff occupying the chair. Mr McDuff said all were . aware that about £450 was in hand for t'he erect'on of a memorial. Mr WaKon had written to the Minister for Education that this amount was to be offered to tire erection of a district high school or technical school.

Mr Walton reported having received a reply from the Hon. C. J, Parr, who congratulated the people of Ngatea on the handsome sum of £470 they had raised to perpetuate the memory of those who had so loyally served their country. The Minister’s letter continued: “ With regard to the suggestion that the money should be used in aid of the erection of a district high school or a technical school at Ngatea, I have to say that it is not competent for me to take any action in such a direction until the matter, has been considered by the Education Board of the district. - Further, it will be necessary flor tne question of establishment of either class of school to be submitted to the Council of Education. I therefore suggest that you forward to the Auckland Education Board a statement showing in detail the number of secondary school pupils who would attend the' school and other inform ation. If the establishment of the sc, hop! were approved it is usual for the department to provide the cost over and above any sums contributed locally, and in such case, therefore, the. subsidy would not be paid ( on 'the committee’s contribution. You win recognize .that it is immaterial whether the portion of the cost prow’ded by the Department is given as subsidy or by way of special grant.”,! Mr Walton explained that the matter must first be considered by the Education Board and, the Council of Education, but must ultimately be decided by the Minister. ' Mr McDuff asked the incoming committee not to lose sight of that important matter. 1
