The Paeroa Post and Telegraph Office and telephone exchange, will be closed on Anzac Day, April 25.

A meeting of the R’otokohu Ratepayers’ Asosciation will be held tonight.

The date of Dalgety and Co.’s Paeroa sale h,as been altered from April 27 to Monday, May 1.

Nearly all the benzine storage places in Paeroa have ' been condemned by the' Government inspector, the use of some being forbidden and improvements to others being ordered.

A vacancy has occurred on the Paeroa Borough Council, by the resignation of Cr. Arch. White, whp is leaving the district. The town clerk (Mr P. C. Furley) h,as been instructed to take steps for a by-election.

The detriment to the outfall drains and septic tank outlet owing to the siltatipn of the Ohinemuri River was referred to at last night’s, meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council, and it was decided to bring the matter under the notice of. the, Minister ofi Public Works next week.

A Chevrolet car belonging to Mr D. Leach was practically destroyed by fire during Easter. Mr Leach and three friends were travelling bn the Rahu Road in the car, when it. ignited, presumably on account of shortcircuiting, and the heated state of the car due to hill-climbing, which would make the benzine very volatile. Despite the efforts of. the party to extinguish the flames, the car was gutted, possibly beyond repair. St was insured for £2OO, and had recently been overhauled.,

Acknowledgment of the services of the Paeroa Town Clerk (Mr P. C. Furley). in view of the satisfactory financial position, was majje by the Borough Council at ■the monthly meeting last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. E. Brerian) anl Cr. VZ. Marshall (chairman of the Finance Committee) moved and seconded, respectively, a resolution that a bonus of £25 be granted. Or. Marshall referred especially .to the clerk’s successful efforts in getting the rates in.

It has been pertinently suggested that a donation of butter, cheese, and meat by the Government of New Zealand to the Russian Famine Relief would not only serve a humanitarian purpose, but would create better market conditions for our produce. The Australian state governments have such gifts, and the New Zealand Government might well follow suit.

Complimentary references to the capabilities of Mr W. H. Taylor as Council inspector of-sewerage installation were contained in a confidential. report received by the Paeroa Borough Council at the monthly meeting last evening from Mesirt Gannon and Worley, supervising engineers. The tenour of the letter indicated that the Council’s, and therefore the ratepayers', interests ,are being alertly watched.

The annual meeting ofl the Paeroa Referees’ Association will be held in the Fire Brigade Shed on Wednesday at 8 o’clock.

The Lands Department has finished metalling the gap in the Pipiroa-Nga. tea road; and the trolley lines are now being pulled up to be moved to Ngatea, where they will again be put into use.

The recently imported dredges working on the Hauraki Plains are reported to be doing creditable .work. The Michigan walking dipper dredge, which commenced' digging a receptacle drain on November 10 last, has done about a mile and a half. The drain is 10ft wide. A Bucyrus dredge, engaged in building a stopbank on the lefjt bank of. the Piako River from Kerepeehi towards Kaihere Landing, has covered a distance of about a mile in about three months. Another Bucyrus dredge has improved about a mile of the Ngarua canal, depositing the spoil bn the roadside .to be used later for roadmaking. . From information received ’ from the Plains it is ascertained that the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Public Works, will be visiting the Hauraki Plains on April 27.
