.The Hauraki Plains County’s monthly meeting on Monday was a lengthy one, and quite a lot of business was done. The finance committee met at 10.30 a.m. and rose»at 12.15 for lunch. Continuing at 1 p.m., it sat till about 3 p.m., when the open council meeting commenced. The business not completed at 530 p.m., the meeting was resumed after tea, and sat till nearly 10.30 p.m.
A certain amount of interest Was evinced at the sight ofi an airplane flying over Paeroa on two occasions recently, the last being on Monday afternoon. The machine looked like a huge dragon; fly skimming through the ambient air, but not so spectacular as the squadrons of fifteen or so that were wont to reconnoitre over the war zones in the (familiar “V”shaped formation. Judging by the interest displayed at the appearance of an airplane, solus, an exhibition of a few of the many types of British, French, and German planes that were on view in the London Exhibition of Aircraft during the war would draw a record “gate.”
The presence of the Hauraki Plains County Clerk (Mr E.. Walton) and two of-the councillors (Messrs Mayn and McLoughlin) at a settlers’ and ratepayers’ meeting at Patetonga last night was taken advantage ofl to stress upon those present that some of the past year’s rates were overdue. Mr Walton said the Cpunc.il would have considerably more money to spend if the ratepayers would pay their rates. Mr McLaughlin said it was a pleasure to attend the meetings, but it was nice for Cr. Mayn and himself to sit at the Council meetings and be told that Patetonga ratepayers were not paying their rates. He urged them all to pay at least the hospital rates, as the Council was losing money by the nonpayment. A SAFE MEDICINE.
