Under the auspices of the Netherton Hall Committee w a very successful basket social was held on Wednesday evening in aid of the funds for the electric lighting of the hall, with the result that a sum of £5 was secured for that purpose. The baskets were “Dutch,auctioned,” reaching up to 19s, and the committee is very grateful for the ladies’ valuable help. Miss. Samant presided at the piano, and Mr A. Spencer officiated as M.C. TURUA. gymnasium classes. At the Victoria Hall on Monday evening exhibitions were given q. gymnastics and boxing, after which a public meeting was held to complete the formation of a proposed gymnasium club. It was decided to call the club the Turua Gymnasium Club. The following were added to the committee already elected by the Sports Club : Messrs J. Thrupp, A. Johnson, A. Dance, L, McCoid, and R Prisker. At a subsequent meeting of the committee the. membership fee of 5s was approved, and in addition the subscription for youths under 16 was fixed at half price. It was decided thaLthree of the committeemen find a suitable instructor at reasonable terms. It was also decided to hold weekly meetings in the winter, and to get all hecessary gymnasium gear. The club has already a membership roll of 30. THE SCHOOL. Dr. Davies visited the Turua school on Tuesday, when the headmaster .reported on the overcrowded state. Particulars were given to the effect that in one room there was only. 8 square feet per child, and barely 10 square feet per child in another. KEBEPEEHI.
SPINSTERS’ DANCE. About 40 couples occupied the floor at the spinsters’ dance in the Kerepeehi Hall on Monday night.; The proceeds, £5 2s 6d, are .to be devoted to tffe purchase of crockery for the hall. ■ , The ' prog-'Wrno included seversvocal items; ■;/'ch included songs by a male quartet'’"' (Messrs Kidd, Woodbridge, Dent, ana Cahill), parodies by five spinsters (Misses Fawcett, Chatfield, Evans. Clark, and Mr Duff), and individual items by Mesdames Twist, Davis, Frecklington, Mr Twist, and Master Dally. For the dancing Mrs Murdoch find Messrs Twist arid Murdoch supplied the music, and Mr Hal croft obliged wi*h extras.- Messrs Jenkins and Dent made capable M’s.C. -SPORTS ASSOCIATION. There were about 30 members pre-, sent at a general meeting of the Kerepeehi Sports Association on Tuesday evening. Mr J. H. Nicholson occupied the chair in the absence through illness ofl the president, Mr A..Chatfield. Mr’Nicholson had pleasure in reporting that Mr Chatfield’s health was improving. Tenders for the refreshment and luncheon booths were considered, and Mr H. G. Wood’s tender was accepted. The grounds conunittee was deputed to inspect the grounds, and witn members' bf the A. Association .grounds committee to effect necessary The secretary was instructed to interview Mr E- Taylor, resident engineer, with a view to obtaining a piece of ground for vehicles. The .following protest committee was elected: Messrs A..Chatfield, PHenry, and A. Fisher. The election of judges and timekeepers for the chops was left with Mr A. Fisher. It was announced that a fair number of entries had been received for the chops. TheXandicaps would be announced, in the “Gazette” next Wednesday. Mr A. J. Inriis signified his intention of showing pictures between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. on the spprts day, so that visitors staying for the dance would not have any idle hours to waste. Arrangements were made for the suitable rtfiming of cars from Paeroa and launches up and down the river. PERSONAL. Or. C. D,avies visited the school on Monday and made an inspection, of the children. Mesdames Innis and Murdoch left on Tuesday on a holiday trip to Rotorua.
NGATEA. PERSONAL. The Rev. Hemmings; the new resident Methodist minister for the Hauraki Plains, arrived early in the week, and will conduct' his first Plains service at Waitakaruru next Sunday morning, , The Rev. Blake- 1 more will leave to-morrow for Paeroa. " Mr W. Wright has been installed as tester at. the Ngatea factory in place of Mr W. Haman, who left for Hamilton on Monday. Mr D. M. Quarrie, of Matata (Bay of Plenty), recently paid his last visit to Ngatea prior to Tiis departure on a business trip to England and the Continent. He sails from Auckland in a fortnight’s time. WAITAKARURU. VALEDICTORY. A surprise farewell evening was given to miss Rose Hicks on’the eve of her departure from Waitakaruru about 60 people participating in the farewell, .Mr Burdess,-on behalf Of the company, presented Miss Hicks with a manicure set, Mr Donaldson responding on her behalf.
