1 Word was received by Haora Tererenui that the Hon. the Minister! for Native Affairs, Dr. Pomare, would vfoit; Paeroa to-day.. Particulars of the time the Minister would arrive were not z available when we went to press. .The man Richard Thomas Carroll, who was recently arrested for theft of £26 10s from a room-mate, Mr A. Sims, in a boardinghouse in Paeroa, came before Messrs A. White and A. Tetley, J’s. P.., on Friday, He pleaded guilty to .this charge, and also to ifaat of stealing a coat, and was committed to the Supreme Court, Auckland. The details of both thefts wfere published in a recent issue of the “Gazette.” A native youth of 19 years, named Hohepa Kingu (Joseph. King), of Pa.eroa, came before Messrs A. White: and A. Tetley, J’s.P., on Friday, charged with forging and uttering.. He forged the name of John Ryall to a cheque for £l2, and uttered the same to W. R. Dales, footwear merchant, Paeroa, and received £9 12s change. Accused, who was arrested by Constable McC’linchy, pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court. A meeting of the Returned Soldiers is advertised to take place in the clubr.ooms on Wednesday, April 5. .Business, important.

Messrs Parker and Marks, auctioneers, will conduct a sale on Wednesday next, April 5, at 1.30 p.m, The goods to be offered are the confectionery stock of Mr Pavlak, and other articles, particulars of which appear in the advertisement.

Messrs Brenan and Co lost a valuable draught horse last week. It appears that the animal fell into a deep /open drain, part of the sewerage works. Interesting experiments .in regard to the quantity of cheese that can be made from milk of varying butterfat contents have been made by Professor Drummond, principal of the Kilmarnock Dairy School, and the results are shown by means of photo graphs of cheeses, produced wibh the respective butter-fat contents.. Tn eash case 5001 b of milk was used. It is significant that the cheese of lowest weight, 281 b, contained only .01 O' butter-fat. There were six cheeses made, and the highest weight, 531 b contained ,4.7 i butterfat. Although the same weight of milk was used for aP six cheeses, in every case the weight of the product increased in proportion to the < increase of butterfat. content 1

The cleaning of the Government drains on the Hauraki Plains this year is being done in a much more satisfactory ,way. Only the bottoms of the* drains are cleared of "obstructions, but growth on the banks near the top are not touched. Besides saving a considerable amount! of labour, this method goes a long way to prevent erosion.
