ROTOKOHU PROTECTION.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ACTIVE SUPPORT GIVEN. Further representations in connexion with the proposed protection works for the Rotokohu area were received from the secertary (Mr W. D. Keys) at last night’s meeting cf the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce, as follows: “The members in the Tirohia-Roto-kohu-Perenike Ratepayers’ Associa- / tipn would be laboured to have' your co-operative support in having the protective works on the left bank of the Ohinemuri River at Paeroa completed. This work will protect' completely the Paeroa-Auckland main railway line, and tihe Paeroa-Waihi line, which have been badly washed „ on two occasjons recently.” From the following correspondence by the secretary of the. Chamber (Mr Jas. Couper), it will be noted tlhat the Chamber has been actively supporting the association.’ the Railway department. To the General Manager, N.Z. Railway Department: “This Chaifiber begs to point out that your Department is interested largely in the protection of this area, as tfie recurring wash-outs will continue until -protection is given. The Chamber respectfullyßequests that your Department! also' uses its influence with the Public Works Department to have the work hastened.” MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. To the Minister of Public Works: “This Chamber respectfully begs to bring to your notice the absolute “Necessity for immediate action to be taken by your Department to protect , • the Tirohia, Rotokohu, Pereniki area. There have been two floods in quick succession lately which have caused such extensive damages as tp practically ruin a number of settlers ip the area, and delay on the part of your i/epartment is indefensible. The area requiring, your protection is extremely rich dairy country, and 'has been settled many years. Of late years new settlers have settled there in the anticipation of the completion _pf ‘he Tirohia-Rotokohu area protection, as was promised some four years ago by the then Minister of Public Works. "Trusting that definite action will be immediately commenced by your Department on this work.”
