DRUNK ON TRAIN.

—<> IN “DRY” ASHBURTON. Tbe prevalence of drunkenness on. trains was commented upon by tlie senior-sergeant in the Ashburton Police Court the other morning (reports the Ashburton “Guardian”), when a first offending inebriate, who ditl not appear, was charged with drunkenness on the railway platform. A constable gave evidence that the man had been so drunk that he had to be carried from the railway platform into a taxi for removal te the cells. “I understand,” said the sen-ior-sergeant, “that the railway authorities have puti all the first-class carriages in front of the trains, io prevent these men passing through : but what about ff the second-class passengers? They have just as much right to be saved annoyance and terference from these meir. It is certainly not a fair thing to women travelling on the trains.” In pressing for a heavier penalty to be , imposed on men found drunk on the trains, the senior-sergeant mentioned that such, offenders were liable to a penalty of £lO, or two months’ imprisonment, under the Government Railway Act, for being drunk on the trains, railway platforms, or any railway itremises. The man in this particular case had been hailetl out >n the sum of £2. Accused was fine! the amount of his bail.
