RACING AT PAEROA. OHINEMURI J.C. MEETING (By Paerpa Prad) The acceptances received in connection with the opening day’s racing of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting can be voted of a satisfactory nature. For the Ohinemuri Cup 15 have been paid up for, with Racer ful at the head of the handicap.. The three placed horses in last year’s Cup—Gold Kip, Mangamahpe, and War Tank—are among those likely to come under the orders of Mr Vincent at the starting barrier for the same event this year. The defections from the Cup include Tinohoro, Tresor, Some Fashion, and Prince Charleroi, who have accepted for other races on the programme. With the class Of horses engaged, this year’s Cup should provide an interesting contest. Queen Abbey is to be given an opportunity of earning distinction over a distance, her previous successes having been confined to races of the sprint order. She has been given every chance with 7.0, only 71b above the minimum. There is plenty of .room for interest in the jumping events, the Steeples attracting 15 acceptors and the Hurdles 9. The St. Patrick’s Handicap, of six furlongs, has several worthy sprinters engaged, with Golden Bubble top weight with 9.10, Tama-a-roa and Queen Abbey are also engaged in the Cup. A pleasing feature of the acceptances is the fact that there was but one defection in the race for the two-yc-ar-olds. The Komata Hack Handicap has attracted an acceptance list ofl no fewer than 37, and it gpes without saying that there will be some difficulty in marshalling the field that is likely to face the barrier. The Maiden Handicap has also a list of 37 acceptors, so it can be said that there is every room for a dividend of the solid order resulting from <i surprise win in either of these races. H. Wiggins, who has met witih considerable • success in the saddle of late, has been engaged to ride Geoffrey in the Cup, No Surrender and Kpura, two steeplechase candidates with engagements at the meeting, were sent a journey over the big country at headquarters on Saturday last, and acquitted themselves satisfactorily. Several teams, after competing at the Te Arpha fixture; returned home, but most of them are under orders to return to the Goldfields district this week. Sussex had a quiet reputation prior to commencing, the Country Circuit, but his performances at Thames and Te Aroha were of the moderate order.
