FARMERS IN POLITICS.

OPINION AT KAIHERE SUGGESTION NOT FAVOURED. Though if is the Farmers’ Union Provincial Executive’s proposal' to nominate Farmers’ candidates to contest six electorates at the next general election, t,he matter is not receiving the united support of the farming community. z Another instance of this fact was displayed at a meeting of the Kaihere branch the NZ. Farmers’ Union last evening, Mr W. Mclnnes presiding. The Provincial Executive’s circular regarding the matter was read. Mr McLoughlin did not) support tlm proposal. Mr Harris also did not support it, saying that the farmers were well represented in the present Government. Mr E. W, Cowdrey’s opinion was diverse, stating that the farming community should have official representation in the House. The farmers’ interests would be looked after better with a Farmers’ Party in Parliament than they were at present. He did net think there would be much vote-splitting in the country electorates. Mr Harris moved that the branch, was not in favour of the formation of a political party. Mr Cowdrey proposed an amendment that the branch was in favour of the formation of a farmers’ political party. The motion ■ was carried.
