DRAINAGE OF PAEROA.
EFFICIENCY THREATENED'. BY SILTATION . OF RIVER. BOROUGH COUNCIL ALARMED. Considerable interest,- was displayed by the members, of the Paeroa Borough Council last evening in matters % concerning • flooding of certain areas outside the borough., and the effect of the progressive siltation of the Ohine-i muri -River on the Paeroa Borough drainage. . The Tirohia, Rotokohu, Pereniki Ratepayers’ Association (Mr W. Keyo secretary) asked for the Council s support in urging upon the Government the building of a stop bank on the left bank of the Ohlinemuri River. Or. E. Edwards strongly supported ’ the resolution.- There was some c>t the most valuable land in the district in the area affected, and its preserva* l tion and improved condition /for pro- . duction were of much importance to the • town of Paeroa. Cr. Edwards seconded, and a motion was carried. Cr. W. Marshall, said the bed of the - Ohinemuri River was rising so fast with silt that the outflall &f the town .. drains would be seriously impaired ■ in efficiency. . He moved, that the Council inform, the Public Works Department of the facts, and that the ; Departmcht .be urged to remedy the ; condition of affairs by dredging the silt out of the river. Cr. Edwards commented that the - expenditure of £40,000 on the drain- - age of Paeroa borough would be wasted if the river was hot dredged. His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. EBrerttm) strongly supported. The Department had turned a deaf ear to the recommendations of the 1910 and 1921 Commissions.
