THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, MARCH 6, 1922. A POLICY JUSTIFIED.

Building operations now going on in Paeroa should convince pessimistic people that there are good grounds for the faith most enlightened and far-seeing residents have in the future of the town. It is also a vindication of the policy of modifying the building by-law somewhat. When the controversy on this subject was going on the opinion was freely expressed bydeading lights that the parties who most desired the modifications had no intention of building. These opinions have been belied by the facts. Last week a contract was let by Mr W. M. Cullen' for two new shops on the corner of Belmont Road anl Williams Street, and a .permit for another in Normanby. Road has been granted to the same gentleman. Also, a permit has been granted for two shops to be erected in Belmont Road by the Paeroa Engineering Co., Ltd Both these parties had previously refused to build under the by-law as it then stood. The lesson to be taken to heart js that, the British people have-a genius for compromise, and where such can be effected there is generally some progress made, but when neither party is disposed to budge an inch there is invariably a deadlock. When the three vacant allotments upon which the proposed buildings are to be erected Sre built upon a substantial addition will have -been made to the business accommodation of the town, and a much-needed improvement effected to the main street. It is to be hoped that budding enterprise of all kinds will be similarly encouraged.
