FLOOD PROTECTION WORKS.

gjr,—i would like, on behalf of many fellow settlers and myself, to express our appreciation of the complete grasp of our position as shown in the leading Jfrticle of the "Gazette” of March 1. Many of us have been pioneers in working for river protective works and but we are to (day being made the victims of our own zeal for progress. Most of us will practically Have to cease farming for this season, and to obtain any redress for the damage suffered by us may take precious months, or longer. I would, therefore, suggest a straightout conference between the experts of the, Public Works Department and members of our association to try and have some settled policy arranged immediately. Obviously many settlers in our areas must have some immediate compensation and protection, or take the alternative suggestion of the recent Commission and sell their holdings for ponding areas ; as we cannot remain in ponding areas in all but name to suit the convenience of a department, I am making this ■suggestion in good faith, openly; and our association is ready immediately to do its share at an early conference. W. D. KEYS, Hon. Secretary Tirohia-Rotokohu-Perenik’ Ratepayers, Association.
