BOWLING.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. WON BY F. J- WELLS. The annual Champipn of Champions Tournament was held on the local green on Saturday, last, and proved a most exciting contest, all the games being keenly contested, and close scores were the result. Unfortunately three clubs failed to send representatives, but, nevertheless, there was no interest lacking in the games played, as evinced by the goodly number of spectators, who were treated to an exceptionally fine exhibition of singles. The various clubs represented were: Morrinsville (Coghill), Te Aroha (Clothier), Waihi (Scnibr), and Paeroa (Wells) . The outstanding feature of the tournament was the play-off between Clothier and Wells, both o 0 whom, had won two games each. This game was one of the best singles games played on the Goldfields.. Clpthier won the toss and gave Wells first "kitty.” The firs*, head, after many changes, resulted in Wells 1 up. The next three heads went t'o Clothier, the game then being. Clothier 5, Wells 1, on the fourth head. On-the fifth head Wells, playing a beautiful drawing game, scored a 3. On the sixth head Wells was lying 3, when Clothier by a pretty shot drew the "kitty” back for 2, making the game Clothier 7, Wells 4, on tho sixth head. Wells, by exceptionally fine play, scored on the next four heads, the game being Wells 10, Clothier 7, on the tenth head. Clothier scored 1 on the eleventh head. Wells then replied with 2 points bn each of the next two heads and on the thirteenth head the scoreboard showed Wells 14, Clothier 8. It was then that Clothier .was to be seen at his best, and by absolutely perfect bowling scored 7 points on the next five heads. Clothier 15, Wells 14. on the eighteenth head. Wells played a perfect bowl on Clothier's shot lying bn “kitty," scoring 1. making the game 15 all. On the ninteentl; head Wells placed . two shots immediately in front of “kitty.'' Wells 17, Clothier 15. On the last head Wells placed his first bowl on “kitty,” and Clothier’s third bowl just rested it for shot. Wells played his last bowl short in the running, and thus won the game by disturbing his opponent’s “port.” The results of the games are as follows : First Round. —Wells .18 v. Senior 17 ; Clothier 18 v. Coghill 16. Second Round.—Clothier 20 v. Senior 15 ; Wells '2O v, Coghill 14. Third Round.—Wells 17 v. Clothier 10; Coghill 15 v. Senior 15. The Paeroa .Bowling Club is certainly .proud to possess the champion bowler of the Goldfields, which includes seven prosperous clubs. Mr Wells’ win is a most popular one, as he has played very . consistently throughout the season. The presentation of the handsome trophy which accompanies the honour of winning the championship will be made on a suitable 'occasion in the early future. The runner-up, Mr Clothier, is also to be commended oh his brilliant play, which brought forth rounds of applause from the enthusiastic spectators.
