THAMES V. PAEROA. PAEROA AGAIN VICTORIOUS. Paeroa defeated Thames on the local ground on Saturday last by an innings and 34 runs. Thames won the toss and sent Paeroa in, Pivott and Halliday opening to the bowling of Gibson and Gordon. A good start was made, the total reaching 31 before Pivott was bowled by Gordon. Carroll then joined Halliday, and both batsmen went for the bowling hard. Carroll brought off some tremendous drives, one going over the band rotunda. The score mounted rapidly, both batsmen hitting sixes. Just when a big stand seemed imminent Halliday was caught out magnificently on the boundary by Buchan, who in making the catch had to run over thirty yards. The retiring batsman played a very useful innnings, towards the end of which he drove hard. He was missed at point when in his twenties, but otherwise, he made no faults. Furley, the newcomer, took some little time to settle down, cutting two rising balls dangerously through the slips. Carroll continued to score rapidly, but with the score at 107 f he was beaten by a ball from Gordon. Carroll gave a great display of hitting, and included, in his innings, were four sixes and four fours;. Shand did not 'stay long, being bowled by Gor-i don’s third ball, but with Dare in another useful partnership, ensued. Furley was now scoring more rapidly, and played some very pretty shots past point and mid-on as well as driving each bowler to the boundary; Dare was dismissed at 144, and Maritin took his place. Furley hit Murray over the off boundary for 6, but with his score - at 59 he was taken in the. slips off Gordon. The retiring batsman, with the exception of the two chances previously mentioned, gave a fine display of; batting—driving, cutting, and hitting all the bowlers tried. Martin made a few good hits before being given out l.b-Wj to Dare. Bowden hit hard for 24, and the innings, closed for ’212, the best total made by Paeroa for many years, if ever. Gordon was the most success- - ful bbwler for Thames, his four wick--ets costing 70 runs. Thames opened their first innings with Gleeson grid Buchan tp the bowling of Carroll and Bowden. A fair start was made, 26 runs being scored before Buchan was- bowled by CarrolL As it happened, there was no other stand worthy of mention. Bowling flas,i right through the innings, Carroll’s bowling was too good for the Thames batsmen, and the whole side was but for 74. Carroll took his last five wickets for 12'runs# and in all took six wickets for 26 runs./■Following on in a second innings Thames made another 104 runs, A. Dare carrying his bat for 58.
