TRANSPORT OF METAL.

FOR NETHERTON-TURUA ROAD. The matter of purchasing and transporting metal "to be used for the' unmetalied portion of the NethertonTurua Road was discussed at the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council on Monday. The chairman explained that Crs. Harris and Chatfield apd he were ap? pointed a committee to deal with the towing of metal and were now in a position to report on the matter. Cr. Chatfield said they had interviewed the clerk of the Thames County Council, who had quoted Ils for the first 1000 yards and 10s 9d for the second thousand yards. They were informed that the punts could not get up the Kauaeranga River. They had asked several firms to tender for tpwing. Only one tender, from Mr Foote, had been received, and that was 10s 6d per yard. Mr Foote had said that if one of the punts were cut down ihe would‘reduce the tender by 2s per yard. Cr. Harris said that when they had .interviewed the clerk of the Thames County Council the clerk had given a statement in writing. The tender was 100.0 cubic yards at Ils 6d, at 150 yards per week, and 2000 yards at 10s/9d. ( Cr. Death considered that the total ' cost would be too high. Cr. Chatfield said that the .metalling of that unmetalled portion was an important matter. Cr. Death said that metal could be brought from Karangahake at 8s per yard and landed per train at Paeroa'. and dumped on the road at a little over 10s. Cr. Chatfield contended that the metal could be brought from the Hikutaia quarry cheaper, even by allowing one yard out of every three for repairing the Ohinemuri County ' roads. Cr. Hayward urged the necessity of completing the metalling of the road in question, and suggested that a committee should be appointed t o go into Cr. Death’s suggestion.. Cr. Death and the chairman were appointed to go to .Karangahake to interview Messrs Ratliff and Son regarding the matter brought up by Cr. Death for obtaining metal from the Karangahake quarry.
