Tn a further letter to the council they stated that it was essential for a clerk of works on a sewerage con-, tract to be thoroughly experienced in all branches of sewerage work. They were not aware that Mr W. H. Taylor had had any experience, but considering the council had already made the appointment nothing can be done but to give Mr Taylor a chance of proving his capability. Unfortunately in the last flew weeks there seems to be a marked slackening of effort in the war to exterminate the rat. Many households are doing nothing.. I desire to inform you that apathy now will be disastrous. This month, more than any 7 other, your efforts must be redoubled,, for with the next month begins the plague season. The Direct tor General of Health in Sydney- last week, in announcing another human case, stated that a large visitation of the dread disease might be predicted 'almost with certainty next month. The- danger in Sydney is almost equally our danger. I would ask, therefore, that you renew your efforts to poison - and trap rats and to clean up your district during the next few weeks. Only in this way can New Zealand be assured of comparative immunity.”
