THE NGATEA SCHOOL.
♦ .. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Ngatea School i Committee was held in the school on Monday evening. The following attended : Messrs W. McDuff (chair-t man), W. J. Clare, G. T. Davidson, and C. W. Shultz. Mr R. Jamieson, the newly-appointed headmaster, was also present. ' | ELECTRIC POWER POLES. | On an application from the Power Board’s engineer to permit electric power poles to be put on school property, it was decided not to obstruct that essential. woVk and to make the recommendation to . the Education Board The children’s safety should, , however, be provided for. The chairman and secretary were deputed to I obtain fullest information regarding the matter and to secure plans de-i fining the position of the poles. ! SCHOOL IN FEBRUARY. ; Mr > Davidson said that Children came to school for half a day. He i asked whether, as the hours were so short, they could not attend school for three days at the full time. Mr McDuff explained that owing to the hot weather durifig February and for health reasons the hours were cut down. Mr Jamieson pointed out that it was essential to open only half-time, except where it was desired for speH cial reasons to keep open full time. Mr Davidson considered the whole thing was a mockery. “If they consider the health of the children,” he said, “why don’t they give us sufficient accommodation. Mr Jamieson announced that Dr. Davis would be visiting the school during the week, so that would give the committee an opportunity to bring some matters before him. The chairman and Messrs Clare and Hayward were deputed to wait on the doctor. The committee men considered that the health conditions at the school were those which urgently required remedying, and it was decided to invite Mr A. Burns, the member for the district on the Education Board, to visit the school and see for himself the conditions under which the children were being taught. SCHOOL PICNIC. Matters concerning the annual school picnic were discussed, and it was resolved to hold this year’s outing in Mr Hayward’s paddock on Fri-» day, March 3. Two sums, £ll (left over from the previous year’s picnic) and £2 9s 3d (from Mr Macken’s farewell) are to augment the picnic fund.
