THE MEAT MARKET.

PRODUCER AND RETAILER.

EXCESSIVE CHARGES ALLEGED. At the meeting of the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union on Saturday, Mr McDuff presiding, Mr. Greer, drew attention to the low price., at which the butchers were buying their meat and the high prices they were retailing it. .

Mr Cleaver said a certain butcher from a certain town came to Ngatea sales and bought cattle for about 30s each and took them to his town, where meat was the dearest in the Auckland province. ' Mr Green said the wages could not come down unless the cost pf living was reduced..

Mr McDuff contended that the butchers could sell, meat considerably cheaper than what they were doing. Mr Green said a butcher obtained £l4 profit on .a 9001 b beast. The butcher got the profit, but the consumer was paying for it.. Mr Clare suggested asking the local butchery proprietor if there was an explanation for the local prices. Mr McDuff said that at Feilding butchers were retailing mutton at 2<l per lb or 8s for a whole sheep. Mr Shultz said that while dealing with the meat question they might also deal with provisions. Mr Davidson said the low prices at the stock sales .were on indication that the cost of living would soon be much cheaper.
