TURUA SPORTS.
GOOD ENTRIES RECEIVED. The energetic committee of the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Club, which has arranged a sports gathering to be Jield at Turua on February 9, has'spared no effort to make the event an outstanding suc-i cess. The varied programme of chopping and foot events has. attracted large entries, athletes hailing from not only the Hauraki Plains and the Thames Valley, but from places as far afield as Auckland, Hamilton, Te Awamutu, and Morrinsville. The foot events in which most interest is being taken and for which the best entries have been received are 100yds, 220yds, 44'0yds, and halfmile handicaps. Each of these events has attracted ih the vicinity of 20 entries, while the mile handicap and 120yds maiden race have each about a dozen.
The chopping events will, perhaps, attract most interest on the day, and though the entri.es are not as large as those for the foot events there will undoubtedly be some very keen competition. The entries in these classes range from a dozen to 15. The energies of the committee have not all been spent on deliberations in the committee room, but. have taken a practical form. Working bees have been organised and tpie grounds have been put in readiness for the sports. Some committeemen besides giving their work also lent implements with which to carry it out. They had good support from’ the Turua residents, with the consequence that the grounds are now. in very fair order.
