ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEREST. PAEROA-TAURANGA line. The Public Works Statement, as presented to Parliament last Saturday by the Hon. J'. G. Coates, lhas several items of local Interest. RAILWAYS. When referring to the East Coast Main Trunk the Minister said that on the Waihl-Athenree section practically all earthwork had been completed, except fillings around abutments of bridges, and minor works at the Athenree station yard. There were still several bridges to erect. On the Katifkati section e.arthwork had.' proceeded at a satisfactory rate, fencing erected, culverts .built, and drains opened up over a l&ngth of three miles. Land-plan surveys completed from four miles to 12 miles. Considerable trial surveys were made between 15 and 18 miles, and one permanent deviation pegged between 14 and 15 miles. While it was hoped that finances would permit of th© completion of! this line to Katikati. before a temporary halt was called, it may be necessary, in 'order to provide money for more urgent works, to. discontinue work temporarily.
