Anniversary Day falls on Sunday next, J.anuary 29. The usual public holiday will be observed on Monday, 30th.

In reference to the . paragrapn which appeared in the last of the “ Gazette,” stating that an axle of, Paeroa-Hauraki, Plains mail car broke one day last week on the trip, the proprietor, Mr W. Rpigard ,states that it was the extr,a motor, and not the mail car, to which the mishap occurred,

' An injured eye, necessitating an operation, was the result of an altercation and subsequent blows between two natives, Joe Wickliffe and Karu, while playing billiards on Saturday. It appears that the wrangle occurred over the marking of the score, - and Karu struck Wickliffe, with the result that the latter had to be sent co the Waihi Hospital to have an operation performed on his eye.

'A. haystack belonging to Mr C. Winder, Wharepoa, caught fire on Saturday, and was destroyed.

On the first count five votes were needed to give the three-fifths majority. There )s always a possibility, through technicalities or irregularities, of a decision being reversed when the figures are very close, but of course there is the equal chance that the recount may give the opponents a more substantial lead, in which event the position will be “as you were.” The dredge on( the Waitakaruru-i Maukoro' canal is now reported to be working consistently and is at pre, sent about two miles from the mouth of the canal at Waitakaruru, When the canal is completed it will be a deejded l acquisition to the land in that area, and mbre particularly to the soldier settlements. ] A careful examination of the figures in connexion with the recent machinery loan poll on the Plains discloses a very interesting fact. The settlements in the vicinity of and in direct communication with Thames, being, of course, to a. great, extent under Thames influence, have either voted solidly against the proposals or increased the votes .against. \ Pate-, tonga and Tahuna are exceptions to* (his case, not being in the vicinity of Thames, but" take, for instance, Tania, with 22 votes for and 43 against. At Waitakaruru at the last poll there were only 10 objectors and 48 for, while last week the number favourable to the proposal Was the same, but the objectors’ votes had increased threefold'. Kopuarahi/ was in a similar position, there being no votes recorded against previously, but last week there were 14. Pipiroa people also declared themselves against the loan. It’s a curious fact that, many seemingly intelligent people prefer suffering and sorrow .to health of body and peace of mind. You know you are suffering secretly. You know you need help. You have proved that doctoring and drugging are useless for your case. Why, then, permit blind prejudice and oldfashioned ideas to dominate your mind and warp your judgment ? This is the year 1921—a new age —the age of the aeroplane, the ag? of wireless telegraphy, the age of the De Laurence System of Healing that has brought and is bring health and healing, hope and harmony, into thousands of darkened lives. Why suffer ? Would you be healed ? Will you investigate ? Have you the WIL TU BE WELL ?
