BOROUGH COUNCIL.

JANUARY MEETING. The montniy meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last evening. Present: His Worship the . Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan), E. Edwards (deputy-mayor), W. Bain, G. Lamb, W. Marshall, F, E. Flatt, and T. P. Vuglar. Cr. Rev. F. McDonald was absent (he being at Palmerston North, where he is taking the Rev .Isaac Jolly’s pulpit). CRITERION BRIDGE. Mr Maj (District Engineer for Public. Works), wrote pointing out that his officers had, during the course of inspection of the Ohinemuri River, noted that the Criterion bridge was in need of repair, and pointing out what steps might be taken to remedy exist-? ing defects. The Council was appreciative of Mr May’s good offices, and on the motion of the Mayor it was decided to write, thanking him, and to ask if he would be good enough to supply , the Council with an estimate of the 'cost of the repairs indicated in his letter. BAND INSTRUMENTS. The clerk reported having received an offer for hand (instruments. This was considered satisfactory. Cn Vuglar said while the price, £7l, was right, the Council would be unwise to sell, as the instruments might be re-i quired at a future date. A band rotunda was being erected on the main street, and there was one in the Domain, and therefore it seemed ridiculous to sell the instruments. Furthermore, the cost of the instruments was partly met by public subscriptions. Cr. F. E. Flatt said the instruments were probably worth £l5O, or at least it would cost that amount to replace them. He would only sell the worst instruments. Cr. Marshall said the discussion was out of order. The Council had passed a resolution to the effect that tJhe instruments be sold, and the question now before the Council was as to whether £7l was a good enough offer. His Worship the Mayor said the instruments had cost about £l5O, and six years’ use had been got out of them. The public subscribed £25 cr £3O towards the purchase money. The band committee and conductor advised the Council to accept the offer. He, for one, was not prepared to spend any more money on a band. His Worship moved the adoption of the report, which was equivalent to agreeing to accept the offer. The motion was carried by four votes to three, the Mayor, Crs. Marshall, Bain, and Lamb voting for, and Crs. Ed wards, Vuglar, and Flatt against. The instruments, therefore, will be sold for £7l.
