GAME WITH THAMES.
WIN FOR PAEROA.
Great excitement prevailed at the High School ground on Saturday afternoon at the match between Thames and "Paeroa, which was won by the visiting team by 33 runs, says the Thames Star.
Ideal conditions prevailed until the Thames Innings, when heavy raiji fell, and rendered tjie ground somewhat difficult. Paeroa batted first, and the wickets commenced to fall rather rapidly, two men being out for 12 runs. The third man added two before succumbing to a well pitched ball from Gibson. Furley then went in, and immediately started placing the ball all over the ground. A succession of throe two’s off Gibson’s bowling were followed by a couple off singled, then he hit a magnificent boundary into the road for four. Furley played a spectaculay game, and showed a clean, free style, and his straight drives to the boundary# were greeted with applause by the spectators. Halliday also batted well, bringing off some fine hits to leg. The bowling was repeatedly changed, no fewer than six Thames bowlers being put on, but Furley proved equally at home with all. A hard hit was dropped by Martin in the long field, and Furley was on several occasions nearly run bur,. Brokenshire now replaced Murray, and with his second bail snicked the bails neatly off Halliday's wickets. Halliday played a very good innings, his partnership with Furley yielding nearly 80 tuns. Ryde followed, and secured two singles before being bowled by Brokenshire. Tubberty quickly knocked up 17 before being bowled by Brokenshire. The wickers now began to fall rather rapidly, but Furley was much in evidence, with his fine hitting, and the innings closed with the latter unconquered, carrying his bat for 90 runs.
Light rain was falling when Thames went in, ..and Gleeson soon opened the score. Martin, however, collapsed at 13, being nicely taken in the slips by Tubberty. Allchin, who then went in. was clean bowled ny Tubberty. Randrup, who replaced him, added five before being caught at mid-on. Brokenshire put up a rather good performance, but was neatly caught by Walmsley after adding 10 runs. Then Gleieson succumb ed to a rather high ball which took the bails off Dare, who contributed the score, of the innings, played a good game, and added 38 before retiring from a catch. With Ricket the former co-operated well, and a succession of smart runs characterised the latter’s performance. The score now stood over the century, and excitement ran high. Thames were wanting 50 to win, and the next man in, Kitching, knocked up a two and a boundary hit for four, but Gibs'dni, his partner, was caught. The last man in, Malin sent over a fine hit to the boundary for four, and added a one, whten he was run but. and the innings closed, Paeroa winning by 33. Walmsley’s cat'ch, when he dismissed Brokenshire. is deserving of mention. Brokenshire, who is a hard bitter, drove the ball with all his might to Walmsley, who was fielding at mid,-on. No one saw the ball l oh its way through the air.- but Walmsley stopped and held it. The scores were as- follow :— PAEROA. H. Pivott, c Gibson, b Brokenshire — . — 8 F. M. Shand, b Gibson — 0
