PLAINS COUNTY WORK.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The report presented by the County Engineer (Mr R. J. Dillon) at the last meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council reads as follows : Metalling at Tahuna. The emtalling of the Tahuna-Mor-rinsvilie road is proceeding slowly, only 118 cubic yards being put out before the Christmas holidays. The contractor has promised to put -on more men and proceed more i apidly with the work. Unless this is done the motor truck will not be working at its best, and as the-driver is paid partly by bonus it will not be satisfactory unless the hopper is kept full. The weather is . now becoming fine for the carrying out of this metalling, but without the contractor for the supply of stone speeding up the two trucks cannot be employed as intended. ' Quarrying at Miranda. Tenders have been invited for the quarrying and napping of. 3000 cubic yards of metal in Coxhead’s quarry on the Miranda RoacL These tenders are returnable to-day, and will be laid before you for consideration. Hikutala Quarry. The supply and delivery of metal for the Ohinemuri County Council from the Hikutaia quarry is now about, completed. As soon as this work is done the truck engaged there will be idle, and some, other work should be found for It to do in the event of the Tahuna quarry contractors not being able to produce enough metal to keep the two trucks engaged. x Turua. The surfaceman at Turua has been employed carting out the scow-load of metal received there. This has been used to fill in the worst holes in the roads in that locality, but a great deal more is required .to improve these roads. Wilpon’s Road. The tractor and the .grader were employed until Christmas. on this road, but have now been sent on to the main NethertonsTurua road, near Hines’, to round up and level the very rough clay portion of this road. The plans for the 'formation of Wilson’s Road have been approved of by the Public Works Department, bqt the engineers have reduced the crown to eighteen inches. The subsidy will be available shortly. Patetonga-Taliuna Road Fortmation. The plans and specifications for the formation of 61 chains of the TaJuunaPatetonga road have been approved of by the officers of! the Public Works Department. They have, however, stiffened the grade in places, which will reduce the cost somewhat but hot make as good a road. It might be as well to again call tenders for the work if it is intended to have it completed this summer; Ferries. A new driving rope is required at the Netherton ferry, the old one being just about worn, out, and needs splicing very often. We are in hopes of being able to fix up a cheap type of electric be.ll at this ferry, and if we ■ succeed it will be a great boon to the ! travelling public as it will enable a . person on the opposite side of the i river to ring up the ferryman at any time of the night.. An extra tank for the water supply should be provided at the Netherton ferry caretaker’s house. Hikutala Stream. I have arranged with the Public Works engineer to inspect the Hikutaia stream, with, the object of clean-, ing out the willows, on Thursday or Friday next. After the inspection I have hopes of, having the work put in hand. Perhaps a small contract would be best for this work.
