THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE Motto : Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1922. 1922,TEAM WORK WANTE

Progress made in Faero-fid district during the past ye.' briefly surveyed in these cc in the last issue of the "Gai fe, the conclusion being that p e | whole the year 1921 had s Wil satisfactory results. Ark^ e i year has now commenced, ay, R it is desired that the rate of fogress should be increased ‘ re

will have to be a much bj r spirit of co-operation show hy the residents, especially the' siness people. Thgre has for ac months past been a twice-. i 'Y motor bus service between ie_ roa and the Hauraki P l ’ s which is plainly a benefit to th the residents of the Plains Q d the business people of Pa; ? a - And now a new era comme'i es, inasmuch as a daily mail ser<9 e I between Paeroa and the Plal was inaugurated yesterday. Ipt these things, the fruit of action and the combine,d effO'°tthe residents of Paeroa "raKoi the Plains, will not bring full P' vantages if a better spirit, is pt displayed in this town. For ample, ih order to offer the jt-

most inducement for counTY people to shop in Thames, .he enterprising business people o * that town arranged for a speU a * train and special launch services, sending out posters all over f l 6 country beforehand. The b J . sl " ness people of Te Aroha likewise combined and distributed posters calculated to induce the c/untry residents to come into T> Aroha on the “long night’’ for tje shops. On both these r posters tie shopping hours were clearly stated, so that no confusion should arise. But what happened in Paeroa . Shop holidays differed surprise was expressed that the business people did not come abreast of Te Aroha and Thames by making similar combined efforts to draw trade; if Thames people couli put down a deposit to guarantee a special train, and arrange for special launch services to and from the Plains on the favourable tide, surely those of Paefba could have got a fleet of cars;or at least a motor bus to and from Ngatea, Kerepeehi, and Nethbiton! Apart from whatever actual business might have resulted, the advertising value would have been considerable, as indicating a progressive spirit. This is only one instance wherein Paeroa might well take lessons from other towns in regard to the efficacy of team work, it is this

combination and co-operation which has been largely responsible for making Hamilton what it 5s to-day. , f Taking a particular portion oi lour district, the Hauraki Flams, the people there ought to realise that no substantial progress can je made until the means of communication are vastly improved; t will be a grave hindrance if the ban proposals which are to be submitted' this month, on the 28th, are not carried, for there will then be little hope of substantially improving the roads for a very long time to come. The

progressive spirits in the lurua district are striving with might and main to get a loan carried for reading purposes, realising that a good wharf and good roads win go a long way towards realising their ambitions of making Turua a distributing centre for the Plains. Boats can now conle direct from Auckland to Turua at any state of the tide, but the present wharf and facilities are inadequate to handle the trade, and the roads in too abominably bad a state to permit of rapid distribution aUa reasonable cost ot no • of the low

Mencv of such poor apologies for BHuds. But with these weakness--les remedied. Turua will make both Thames-and Paeroa look to their laurels for the Plains trade. Ngatea, being in a central position for all quarters of the Plains, possessing in and around it a large area of some of the best of the land, and being favoured in its residents by having some thoroughly live and progressive men, is bound to forge ahead. - Kerepeehi, being the Lands Department centre, and having a large area of good land adjacent which is now being opened up, cannot possibly look backwar... Netherton, well settled and high- , ly fertile, is bound to prosper and develop from year to year. There • is on all sides tremendous scope for development; the exploitation of existing resources requir,es initiative, boldness, broad views, continuous effort, but the results are there to be won. But . partisan strife must be reduced to a minimum; there must be loyal co-operation towards com- .. mon ends instead of the wasting of valuable energies by sectional strife; in short; this magnificent a district will respond generously to the application of team work.
