SALE OF METAL.
BY PLAINS COUNTY COUNCIL.
DIFFERENCE WITH ENGINEER
There were some very, sharp passages between members of the Hauraki Plains County Council and the County Engineer, Mr R. J. Dillon, at the monthly meeting of the Council at Ngatea on Monday. Mr Dillon explained in answer, to Mr Death’s question regarding the metal, sold to Ohinemuri County that the price was 13s per yard.
Cr. G. Death said there was something wrong with the price for, metal, 5s 6d, as against three times as much last year. The engineer had been' asked for metal prices and htey had not been given. The Council would be landed in the bankruptcy conn unless something were done. The engineer should be pulled up. Cr. W. G. Hayward, in supporting Cr. Death, maintained that half t|he Council’s instructions to the engineer had hot been carried out. Certain information given at that day’s meeting Was quite contrary to information given at a previous meeting. Cr. Death said that; the Council was buying inferior metal at 16s, landed, and selling it at 13s. There was some bad business somewhere.
The discussion waxed warmer still, and the Council went into committee.
