TURUA-NETHERTON ROAD.
Sir,—ln reply to Mr R. W. Bagnall’s letter, which appeared in your issue of December 2, with reference to the above road. Mr Bagnall states that to put this road in a fair state would not cost very much, provided it was gone about in a workmanlikJ manner. Well, we as ratepayers would be pleased to have him submit his proposals to us, as he admits there is very little metal on the road. Does Mr Bagnall suggest that £6OOO, if properly spent, would give the same result as the sum we propose to borrow ? This proposal, when analysed, works out as follows: The total length to be laid down is 12% miles, or 1000 chains, and estimating the price of metal ; ati 20s per yard on the road, the £6OOO suggested would purchase 6000 yards of metal, which, when equally divided over the total length, would give a sprinkling of six yards to the chain. The capital is then expended without any provision for scarifying, rolling, spreading, tarring, cost of raising the'loan, and the first year’s interest. We fully realise that the rate is to be a heavy, one, but can we make a road that is going to serve our purpose and be in keeping with the district for less money ? Mr Bagnall assumes he may be wrong, and in my opinion it is unfortunate for the ratepayers that his assumption is probably correct. P. H. HENRY. Turua, December 10, 1921.
