FIVE PENNY POSTAGE.

There is a strong prooahihty that, commencing with the New Year, the letter postage to England, and to other Dominions, will be 5d instead of as at present (says the Sydney Sun). The Postal Conference at Madrid has already agreed that the postage between foreign countries shall, as from the New Year, be increased to a minimum of 5d per oz (,to be exact, 50 centimes on the gold franc basis), and it is considered that this rpte will apply as between England and the Dominions.. The question whetjher there will be a rise in proportion as between Commonwealth States is a matter about which the Sydney postal authorities have no information. ■ Though the increases to foreign countries is a matter of fact no announcement has been made from Melbourne in regard tp them. There appears to be a doubt in the minds of the postal authorities as to whether exchange rates will apply.
