PLAINS COUNTY WORKS.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr R. J. Dillon, engineer to the Hauraki Plains County Coun,'cH, reported as follows at the monthly meeting last Monday: WILSON’S ROAD. The work ofj forming Wilson’s Road, Ne.therton, is in progress. Two drays are carting spoil from the side ditches to the lowest portions of the road. The tractor has been overhauled and is now working at about half the previous consumption of benzine. If the fine weather continues a good portion of the road should be formed this month. TAHUNA QUARRY.
A price for quarrying and breaking the metal in the Tahuna quarry has been obtained from a couple of contractors. These prices will be laid before you to-day. I also intend doing the cartage on a bonus system, so as to expedite the work as much as possible.
TENDERS. Tenders have been called for two formation works dt Tahuna ; namely, Tahuna-Patetonga Road (61 chains), and the Landing Road, Tahuna, 53 chains. Tenders for these works close to-day,.and will be laid before you. TAHUNA DEVIATION. -The twin-pipe culver.t in the large filling on the deviation is threatening to work away. In my opinion, the pipes are too small, and should be replaced by a large concrete culvert before a flood does further damage. The existing 3ft pipes could be used elsewhere. HIKUTAIA QUARRY. In case of the Council re-opening Hikutaia quarry at an early date, I have obtained a price for the quarrying and crushing oil the metal from the party last working there. The Ohinemuri County Council is, prepared to purchase a quantity of the metal immediately, provided that we can deliver it where required. SPECIFICATIONS.
Specifications for metalling Tahuna to .County boundary have been prepared, and submitted to .the Department for approval. Fisher’s, School, and Wilson’s roads have been treated similarly. Others will be taken in hand during the month. The thirds proposal is also in hand, and will be submitted to the Land Board within a few days. MANGAWHARA ROAD. I paid a visit to the Mangawhara Road last time I was in Tahuna, and found it in a very wet and unsatisfactory, state. It is also far too harrow’, and needs widening. The wet places should be metalled, if at all possible. As the road is a long one, the expenditure oU a good deal of money is required. NETHERTON-TURUA ROAD. Tf it is at all possible a tractor and set of harrows should be run over the clay portion of this road, to fill in and level off all the holes and
bumps. Should this be done, it will be a great boon to the travelling public during the summer months.
