THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1921. WAKE UP ! PAEROA.

Although the much desired daily motor service to and from the Hauraki Plains started last Monday, no particular interest was displayed by Paeroa business men. Several residents on the Plains, in conversation with members of the “Gazette” staff, expressed surprise that no Paeroa Commercials came out on the first trip on Monday to Ngatea. They pointed out that the dav was a particularly felicitous one for such a visit, as it was the monthly meeting day of the Hauraki Plains County Council, the members of which comprise the chosen representatives of th? residents of all parts of the Plains. It was also remarked, for by no means the. first time, that the farmers rarely saw a representative of any Paeroa business house on the Plains canvassing for orders, whereas Thames houses sent travellers round at regular periods, winter and summer, to take orders. What mental impression and material difference this contrast makes may be better imagined than described. The lack of “push” on the part of some of our" business men is really discouraging. To give an illustration in point: a certain reputable resident on the Plains was handed a copy of the “Gazette” by one of our representatives ; he glanced over the paper, and his eye rested on a photo block of a certain article, and he said ; "That’s just the thing I’ve been wanting to know where I could get one from.” Our representative promised to give the prospective customer’s name to the firm advertising the desired article. This was duly done that same evening, in writing. Three weeks afterwards the same member of the staff met the same resident again, and asked him if the firm mentioned had written to him giving particulars. z “No, I’ve not heard a word from them,” was the reply. “Evidently they do not want, to do business ; I’ll send to Thames; they, at least, will reply.” Mavbe the above is an extreme case of stupidity and ineptitude, but the general lack of enterprise leaves room for doubt. This paper is doing its best /to create and intensify commercial and social relationships between the people of the town and those of the surrounding district,, but there is a trite and true old saying, “You cannot help a man who will not. try to help himself.”
