THAMES HARBOUR BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Thames Harbour Board was held on Tuesday, The members are : Messrs C. W. Harris (chairman), S. J. Laughlin, H. O. Cooper, A. Bruce, D. Donaldson, J. W. Danby, W. J. McCormick, S. A. Hetherington, and RCoulter. TURUA WHARF. The Northern S.S. Co. drew the Board’s attention to the /need flor repairs to the Turua wharf, which was not, safe in its present condition;. APPLICATION FOR LOAN. An unfavourable! reply was received from the State Fire Insurance regarding an application for loan money. FINANCE. The financial! statement showed a cash, balance of £B2B in the bank, and a total credit of £1024 ; , exclusive of £2OOO on deposit. Accounts amounting tp £639 8s 9d were passed flor payment. KOPU COAL BIN. The N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd.,, requested the Board to consider the idea of either shifting or dismantlijig the Kopu coal bin. This was used for the factory, which was not likely to be re-opened. It appears t,hat the bin appeared as an 'asset on the balance-sheet, but there was a liability of £468 against it.
The chairman pointed out that the Co’s, removal of its business .to Ngat.ea had removed the source from which the Board hoped to recoup itself for ,the expenditure. The amount of rebates on wharfage the company had got from the Board on account of the bin was £429 5 s. —Decided, on the motion of Messrs Bruce and McCormick, that if the Company pays the Bjoard the. amount of the rebate,' the Board will then pay the Company a similar amount for wharf. This would equalise matters and square up the whole account. VALIDATION OF EXPENDITURE. The Board has prepared a draft of a proposed 'Vallidatipn Bill, with the object of having ah amount pf £172 8s 7d incurred by propaganda in respect to the Board's proposed loan of £275,000. The Auditor-General .tagged the balance-sheet, refusing to validate the item of £l?2 8 s 7d. The Board has for the assistance of Messrs T. W. Rhodes and H. Poland (representing Thames and Ohinemuri electorates, respectively), and also the Harbour Boards Association, in getting the Bill through. It transpires that the Napier Harbour Board is, in a similar “pickle,” the amount being £365 10s 9d. SHORTLAND WHARF?
Mr Danby drew the Board’s attention to the dangerous state pf the Shortland wharf, which was in danger of falling over into the berthage.
The Chairman: That bears out what I told, you, .that we should conserve funds,, as Shortland woulld require repairs as well! as cided, on the motion of Mr McCormick, to have temporary repairs effected.
The chairman moved that a. further application be made to the Public Trustee for £6OOO for the Turua wharf. Mr D. Donaldson seconded.— Carried.
