GOLF.

LABOUR DAY TOURNAMENT. The annua} Labour Day tournament, which has beep a local fixture for some years with the Paeroa Golf Club, was held on Monday last. The entries for the events were well UP to the standard of other tournament':, bu,t the wretched condition of the elements proved somewhat discouraging. Visiting players, however, pame from Hamilton, Morrinsvillp, Waihi, Te Aroha, and Thames clubs; to assist, and their efforts were warmly appreciated by the kcal players. During the medal handicap in the morning some, heavy showers passed over, much to the discomfort of the players. A good deal pf labour bad been put in on the preparation pf the greens and fairways, which were in excellent playing condition and were favourably commented on by the many visitors. The president, Mr J. L. Hanna, was ably assisted in the carrying the tournament by a working committee. consisting of I. J. Towel's (secretary), S,, Bishop (captain), and R. L. Miller, F. S. Budd, Bricky Budd', C. Kenny, A- Gorrie, and W. D. Nicholas, and the event passed off without the slightest hitch. Excellent luncheon and afternoon tea was provided by a ladies’ committee, who deserve the thanks of the club for the work they put in and the excellent menu provided. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club very kindly placed the use of its large dining room at the disposal of the club for the day, and this added Jo the comfort and pleasure of those taking part,. The ladies had the tablies tastefully laid out, which gave the large room an inviting appearance. The president’s wife, Mrs Hanna, was assisted by Mesdames Budd, Bishop,, Wyn. Edwards, Reid, Gorrie, Andrews, P, Hagud-Smitli, Cochrane, and Miss Walmsley.

The Putting Competition again proved a great success, and was keen- . ly competed for. During the morning Mrs Andrews; had charge of the competitions, and in the afternoon Mrs W. J./Byrne. This evejat was won by Mrs J- Kenny, of Te. Aroha, after, six play'-offs with Bricky ■ Budd, The men’s Medal Handicap was won hy J.- Kenny with a ne.t score of 77, T. A. Mpresby coming second with 80. The ladies’ Medal Handicap was secured by Mrs Hunger, of Te Aroha, with a net score off! 87,’ Mrs Halligan coming second with 90. The Four Ball Best Ball Bogey Handicap was Won by J, H. Bliss (men), 1 down, and Mrs Halligan and Mrs Hunger (ladies),, all square. For the past Quito flfcrs the closing day function in connection with the golf club has lapsed through various causes. However, although the weather was wet, quite a large gathering of club members assembled on Saturday last, to have the last hit of the season. The credit of a happy and enjoyable gathering is due to Mrs J. Reid, who also provided a sumptuous, afternoon tea. Driving, putting, and. approaching competitions were held for both men and ladies. The winners during the. afternoon were as follows: Men: Driving.—Bricky Budd, Ist, R. ~ Somervell, 2nd: approaching, J; L. Hanna, Ist; W. H. Blakeway, 2nd; putting, A. Gorrie. A hearty vote of thanks was passel tp Mrs Reid by acclamation.
