THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1921. PLAINS AND PAEROA.

' Everyone was pleased when the recent spell of dry weather broke up, and those who understood what the rain meant to a parched countryside were Rejoicing, but one can have too much of a good thing. The continued rainfall is having a doubly injurious effect; firstly, because it is makmg the grass too mushy, and thus'causing a diminution of the cream content in the' milk ; and secondly, because of the conversion of unmetalled roads into quagmires. That especially bad stretch of road, of less than a mile in length, between Netherton and the Turua crossroads is particularly difficult to negotiate in bad weather, and cars and all heavy traffic are obliged to go round by the Wharepoa ferry to get to Kerepeehi and Ngatea. The Hauraki Plains County Council has authority, to raise moneys on an old loan for the metalling of the Netherton-Turua road, junCtioning with the main road to Kerepeehi, but nothing can be done until the weather clears up. That the existence of a good road between Paeroa, Netherton, Kerepeehi, and Ngatea would be of mutual benefit to all concern; ed has been plainly indicated during the past few weeks. The “Gazette” has for some two months past had a permanent; staff reporter and canvasser stationed on the Plains, with the result that the subscription list in that area of unrivalled fertility and promise has already advanced very considerably. Attracted by the advertisements from auctioneers, professional men, drapers, grocers, and other business people which appear ni this paper, residents on tljp Plains have been coming into Paeroa in larger numbeis than hitherto to make their purchases. As was remarked by two ladies who drove in a few days ago in a gig, which went out laden with parcels, “It is a great convenience to be able to come into town m one’s own vehicle, personally secure what goods are required, and, return with the This, the ladies said, was “much better than trusting to launch deliveries and delays.” There can be no question that, with a reasonably good road all the way to Ngatea, a daily motor passenger and goods service with Paeroa would be immediately put into operation. The people of the whole district are eagerly awaiting so desirable a consummation of the agitation which has now been going on for so long.
