PAEROA TENNIS CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Paeroa Tennis Club .was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday night, the president, Mr Edwin Edwards, occupying the chair. . The annual report and balancesheet as read by the secretary, Mr L. Miller, was confirmed. There was a balance of £25. 18s Id in the bank. — “Quite a happy and prosperous position,” urbanely commented the presideYiL, COURTS. AND FINANCE. Discussing the question of new courts, the president explained that the' Domain Board had no funds to pay for new courts. There was a loan of £lOOO for the Domain, but t.he Government would not give authority for spending money on such purposes at the present time; also, it. was debarred at present from raising debentures; as it would only give 5% per cent, interest. However, -he hoped that the position would improve before long. WAIKATO CONFERENCE. A letter was received from Mr F. C. de la Mare, secretary of the Hamilton Tennis Club, regarding the suggested Waikato Lawn Tennis Association. The president thought there might be some advantage in joining such an assbciatipn, but it was quite, likely that Hamilton people, being progressive, enterprising, and endeavouring to centre everything in Hamilton, were simply out to boost their town. —No action taken, members being doubtful of thie advantages. Several new' members were elected. ELECTION OF OFFICERS?" The following p’cers .were elected : President, Mr E. Edwards, re-elect-ed ; vice-president, Mr L. Miller; secretary, Mr R. B. Penlington; treasurer; Mr L. Miller; committee (officers, members ex-officio) —Ladies, Misses B. Walmsley, I. Taylor, Thorp; Gentlemen, H. Thorp, Ivan Towers, C. Kenny, C. Halliday; auditor, Mr Halliday. x, ' SUBSCRIPTIONS. The subscription was fixed at £1 Is for gents and 10s 6d for ladies, wit.’ 7s 6d and 2s 6d for levies, making the totals £1 11s and £1 0s 6d.. In regard to entrance fees to join the club; the president slid the Domain Board objected to an entrance fee for a club playing on public courts. A Voice: We dp not want more • members.
.Mr Miller said the .entrance fee was 10s. If the Club increased in membership it would have to disband,, as ■the courts were now overcrowded. He would like to see as many members as possible, but if there were' not sufficient courts the position was most unsatisfactory. »
A member : We pay £l5 per annum. The President: But, we have the exclusive rights for four days of the week.
Mr Kenny: There is also the fact that it is hardly fair to secure members and take their fees if the cpurts are so overcrowded that they cannot get many games. It was decided that the entrance fee remain at 10s, in view, of the fact that the Club might have shortly to face half the cost of re'-facing the
courts. Opening day .was fixed for Saturday, November 5, and the tennis balls to be distributed on October 22.
