THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1921. TURUA ROADING.

The Turua residents, by sending a delegation to Taranaki and to Auckland for the purpose of getting first-hand information in respect to modern roading methods, have placed the rest of the community in the Thames Valley and Hauraki Plains , under a debt of gratitude. It is reassuring to note that the delegation has not become imbued with a desire for concrete roads, the cost of which would be oui of the question, even if they did not lack resiliency and require a tar carpet. If tar-macadam, waterproof, resilient roads can be provided, there will be little room for complaint. A notable feature of the report is the unanimous insistence that machinery, owned by the locai body, is essential, and that all works, except carting, should be undertaken by the Council. This is the ripe experience of the public men of those districts where modern roading methods have been in vogue for some years, and bears-out the policy of the Hauraki Plains County Council in regard to its machinery loan proposal. The idea that private individuals can supply the necessary machinery is effectively disposed of. Two things which the “Gazette” has consistently maintained, namely, that concrete is too expensive for the country, and that up-to-date machinery is indispensable for economic results, are amply supported by the unbiassed report of the delegation. Should the idea of the Turua and district residents be put into effect, the result will undoubtedly be a flying leap forward for the whole district, and for Turua township in particular, as a deepwater distributing centre.
