LAD DECAMPS WITH GOODS. -
A lad of 15 years of age named George Brooks, who had been employed by Mr A. Cleavely, farmer, of Turua, was found to -have taken his departure about 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigation showed that a pair of boots, belonging to Brooks’ mate, and a watch, stockwhip, and rug, belonging to Mr Cleavely, were also missing, presumably having been taken by the lad when he departed. Mr Cleavely states that the lad must have taken his belongings away from his quarters before milking time and later got away. He was 'last seen at Kopuarahi, near the disused Kopu ferry. It is thought he was waiting for a launch to pick him up, but it is said that one launch could not do so on account of there not being sufficient water there.
Brooks is stated by Mr Cleavely to have been a quiet lad, and entered his employ only last Friday. He thought the boy was getting on quite well, and when asked how he liked the job Brooks’ reply was that it suited himMr Cleavelj r had no reason to suspect that the boy would stoop to such an action.
The police have been communicated with in regard to this matter.
